Videos exploring Wells and Transatlantic Slavery

The talks and performances on this page were recorded at two key events organised by the Wells and Transatlantic Slavery Network. The first was the Wells and Transatlantic Slavery Conference held in Wells, Somerset on 16th March 2023, which brought together speakers from Britain and the Caribbean. These talks reveal the findings of historical research that connect Wells to transatlantic slavery and consider the enduring legacies that exist today.

The second is After the Flood, a film screening and panel discussion held on 9th March 2024 at Cedars Hall, Wells, marking the one-year anniversary of the conference. The event featured a screening of the powerful feature documentary After the Flood, exploring the Church’s involvement in chattel slavery and its lasting impact. The Q&A that followed, featuring key voices from the film and community leaders, is also available to watch here.

Together, these recordings offer a growing archive of reflections, research and responses that shed light on Wells’ historical connections to transatlantic slavery — and open up vital conversations about memory, legacy and reconciliation today.
