Caribbean Estates

Caribbean Estates

Search for clues about the lives of the enslaved forced to work on Caribbean estates owned by people in, or connected to, Wells. Against the well-documented evidence that remains for slave-owning Britons and their families, there are only fragments, scraps, and brief accounts that can give us some insight into the lives of the enslaved. It is possible, nevertheless, to partially describe life on the plantation estates and enslaved resistance through maps, letters, uprisings, plantation registers and compensation records.
