This 67 minute feature documentary shows how the 18th-century Church became embroiled in chattel slavery. We discover how the Church justified its involvement in the trade and its lasting impact, and explore what this means for Christian reconciliation today. Watch the trailer below.

This event marks the one-year anniversary of the Wells and Transatlantic Slavery Conference where speakers from Britain and the Caribbean came together to share histories, legacies and perspectives regarding the connection between Wells and Transatlantic Slavery. 

The panel for the Q&A includes:

Guest speaker: Robert Beckford, Professor of Climate and Social Justice at Winchester University; BAFTA award winning film maker and the narrator in ‘After the Flood’.
Co-host: Revd Alton Bell, Chair of Movement for Justice & Reconciliation (MJR)
Co-host: Susann Savidge, Somerset African Caribbean Network

A self-guided trail to historic sites linking the City of Wells to British slavery can be downloaded from the website, or freely available to pick up in Wells Cathedral, The Bishop’s Palace, Wells & Mendip Museum and St Cuthbert’s church.

This Wells and Transatlantic Slavery Network event has been organised by the following organisations in particular: Diocese of Bath and Wells, Wells Cathedral, Somerset African Caribbean Network, Movement for Justice & Reconciliation (MJR), Wells Cathedral School who have kindly hosted the event at Cedars Hall and Wells Civic Society who have kindly helped fund the event.
